The sign read “Warning”, but who is going to pay attention to that on Halloween night? Olivia walked right past it without another glance. “Those stupid boys!” she thought. “Do they really think that they can scare me with a sign?” Dylan and Robert have been trying to scare Olivia since they were in 3rd grade. They have never succeeded. She had overheard them talking about trying to scare her again this year. They had invited her to “Dylan’s house” for a party but this is where she ended up. She knew that she wasn’t going to Dylan’s house. “I’ll show them!” she thought.
The steps to the old broken down house were barely holding up. They creaked under Olivia’s weight as she climbed them unafraid. The door was open and she walked straight in. “How can this old house still be standing up?” she wondered aloud. She ascended the old spiral stairs into a long, dark hallway.
Olivia walked down the hallway and finally came to a door that said “STAY OUT”. She laughed and went in. To Olivia, a sign that says “Stay Out” means “Come On In!” She was pretty excited to see what Dylan and Robert had in store for her. All of a sudden a “ghost” jumped out at her from a closet! She grabbed the sheet and pulled. It came off of course. It was Dylan. She just smiled at him and asked him “What’s up?” He was surprised that she knew it was him. She told him about how she had overheard them planning everything. Dylan was pretty upset that she had overheard them. He told her where Robert was and she went looking. She wanted to scare him before he even tried to scare her.
She creped back down the stairs and went to the kitchen. It was old and ugly. There was still some moldy food in some of the cabinets. She went to the sink and opened up the cabinet doors below. Olivia dropped to the floor and stayed quiet and out of sight of the cabinet doors. She wanted to scare Robert real good.
After about five minutes she started to get bored and annoyed. Robert still hadn’t moved in the cabinets. She sighed and went over to the cabinets to look in and tell Robert that everything was ok. She looked in them but no one was there. “Ugh!” she said. Dylan had lied to her! Robert was not under the kitchen sink in the cabinets! She stomped back up the stairs to get Dylan.
Olivia was ready to punch Dylan when she heard the noise in the distance. It was a low moan floating in the wind. She was confused, how could Dylan be so honest that he didn’t know where Robert was? And now how could Robert be making that noise and Dylan be so scared? Olivia was completely baffled. She decided that Dylan was telling the truth and told him sorry.
Dylan and Olivia were both getting freaked out as the moaning got louder and closer. They decided to go investigate. Olivia was pretty interested in the noise. It was coming from the basement of the house. Olivia and Dylan went down the stairs and saw a tape recorder. They were very mad. Robert had played a joke on them. So they went and searched the house for Robert, but they never found him.
Robert wasn’t at school the next day. Dylan and Olivia were confused and worried. No one had seen him since last night. They didn’t know what kind of trick Robert was trying to play. Robert didn’t show up at all for the rest of that week. His parents had sent a search party out looking for him, but they didn’t find him…or any traces of him. Robert was officially lost…or worse.
